Even R&B artists are making dance music in 2022
What happened to real sexy R&B? We want to get it on, let it burn and tell you all our confessions.
Bryson Tiller is on the recent collaboration with David Guetta and Joel Corry with their next single ‘What Would You Do’. This is sounding quite familiar to when Jason Derulo had a turning point in his career when he shifted from R&B/Pop music to the dance hits such as ‘The Other Side’. Bryson Tiller entered the industry with some R&B bangers including ‘Don’t‘ and ‘Next To You‘. Just as he has released a debut mixtape and had commercial success with his single ‘Don’t’ Bryson releases a curve ball while collaborating with two mega Dance DJ’s. Could this be a label move, PR move? Or just shift in direction?
It is difficult to predict if artists are just moving with trends, and there is a clear difference between DIY artists and those signed to major labels. Although the music sounds great, I’d question the originality.
R&B isn’t what it used to be back in the 90s, with original beats and smooth vocals. Classic songs from Montell Jordan, Usher, Marvin Gaye, Mary J Blige and Ray Charles all had evergreen songs that you could listen to time and time again. Every time an Usher song plays in a club or bar, and people dance like there is no tomorrow, but in recent years the genre is really dying and needs to be revived soon. These days it is very hard to find a good quality R&B or Hip Hop song that isn’t badly sampled or copied.
Who is making an impact in 2022?
The ladies are leading with their smooth R&B vocals, Ella Mai, Erykah Badu and Mahalia all have had some hit songs, and take inspiration from legends like Montell Jordan and Mary J Blige is one of the greats, although she hasn’t released any new music in recent years, she did join Dr Dre at the Superbowl performance this year alongside 50 Cent and Eminem.
