The hit song Surma Surma has become the most viewed video globally!
Breaking the record by surpassing 50 million views in just 1 week of release. Jay Sean and Guru Randhawa released the fusion single with Punjabi and English lyrics earlier this week and hit the internet with a storm.
This song first came about after Jay Sean met Guru Randhawa in the UK, when they were both doing some press tours and bumped into each other at BBC Asian Network. But 2 years prior to this meeting, the boys met at the Asian Awards in Wembley Arena, historically because they were wearing the same suit. This got them talking. Right then there was a spark and genuine interest to collaborate.
However, it only took them 2 years to get in the studio and record a song together.
About time boys!
Jay goes on to explain it was a completely organic connection, and by chance that the collaboration was agreed. Both stars have a huge following globally, but never really cross paths at the same shows. Guru is a mega star in India, whereas Jay Sean has a large UK following plus tours in Australia every year.
Where is Jay Sean?
Jay has now relocated to New Jersey in the US for a number of years, raising his two children Avya and Aaryan with wife Thara Natalie. They have since opened up a yoga studio in New York and balance their hectic lifestyles around their children. Jay still performs around the US, fly’s to India, Dubai and Australia to do big tours.
Guru who?
Guru Randhawa is a Punjabi star who grew up in Delhi, India, remains in his home country. But has collaborated with stars, Arjun who gave him his Youtube debut back in 2012 and is signed to label T-Series. This label is the largest for Asian music, the powerhouse for movie soundtracks. The promotional machine for Asian music stars of today. India has a reach of over 10 millions music fans. More than any single market, this can have a large impact on chart statistics.
The words Surma Surma is referring to a warrior/fighter in Punjabi. The whole song is talking about the boys fighting for this strong woman who they can’t get. They are trying to woo her, win her and win her love. But no luck, so they keep persisting.
Sensation on Tik Tok
The song has become a hit all over Tik Tok, Guru keeps releasing snippets of exclusive dance videos. Go follow him at @GuruRandhawa_ on Tik Tok his videos are hilarious. Many fans have followed and created the Tik Tok challenge for Surma Surma, releasing similar dance videos, showcasing their own talents and just enjoying the song overall. There are endless videos to keep you scrolling for hours!
With such a huge scope, Jay Sean and Guru Randhawa brought together two of the largest fan bases by releasing a song together, no wonder the song has over 53 million views (1st March).
